After a nearly four month long hiatus (nearly an eternity in this world), Ida Engberg resurfaces with her next EP for Damian Lazarus’ infamous label Crosstown Records. Ida saw past success with recent releases for Truesoul (‘You Know‘), and Drumcode (‘Unanswered Question‘ and ‘The Color Out of Space’). While the rumor was that her next package would see her returning to Beyer’s label, Crosstown Records picks up her two originals and packs the release with remixes from Ida’s partner and Drumcode label head Adam Beyer, along with Mr.G. Ida Engberg’s first original, A1, is the title track ‘Devil Dance.’ First premiered in Ida’s Drumcode Radio #154 this past summer and originally titled ‘Stoner,’ ‘Devil Dance’ is a synth heavy light industral track with an unexpected vocal. Adam Beyer’s remix crafts the original into a surprisingly bubbly offering with plucks and an exciting bassline while Mr. G’s remixes infuse the track with dub synths and generally darken the track. On the B-side is Ida Engberg’s other original, ‘Silhouette Of A Ghost,’ which is our favorite. The song centers around a stuttered vocal and hard-hitting, head-shaking industrial percussion that has become synonymous with Ida Engberg. This one will rock dancefloors for sure. Check out Ida Engberg’s recent mix for Verboten NYC.
Another day, another track from techno god and Drumcode labelhead Adam Beyer with his partner/producer Ida Engberg. First premiered in July, “You Know” has been appearing in various sets for some time now and finally sees a proper release. “You Know” is very different from the typical Drumcode productions from these two and instead has a deeper house feel to it. The track features a killer bassline, surprisingly melodic synth, and emotional vocal from which the song gets its name. Above all else, “You Know” further illustrates the talents of Beyer and Engberg. They can make gold across many genres.
Words cannot described how excited I was to see that the latest Drumcode release not only features Adam Beyer tracks but is in fact a set of collaborations between Adam and his partner, Ida. I’m relatively new to the Techno scene, but I always eat these releases right up. “Unanswered Question” is an aptly named track that upon first listen is immediately recognizable as an Adam Beyer track. The signature double pronged kick makes an appearance throughout the track while the almost dirtybirdesque synth adds dynamism. The unanswered question vocal sample serves as the name of the title track. The two remixes don’t do it for me – I prefer the original track. Rounding off the EP, we have “Virga” (again a collaboration between Adam and Ida). Virga has a very different sound than the typical Drumcode release – it’s a much lighter track, and reminds me of Cirez D a bit. The kick takes a backseat to the driving hihat and synth line. Another set of strong releases from Drumcode, as we wait for Adam and Ida’s forthcoming release “You Know” on Truesoul.
